Consultative Dialogue on Sanitation Services Highlights Challenges and Advocates for Inclusivity, Nepal
[ 23 Jan, 2025 ]
Citywide Inclusive Sanitation Alliance Nepal (CWISAN), with support from WaterAid Nepal, hosted a Consultative Dialogue on Sanitation Services in Kathmandu, Nepal, on December 31, 2024. As a member organization of CWISAN, FANSA Nepal actively contributed to the event, which gathered sanitation workers, government representatives, and private sector stakeholders
to discuss challenges and identify opportunities in the sanitation sector.
Ms. Srijana Karki, representing FANSA Nepal, showcased a video highlighting the struggles and initiatives of sanitation workers. She also shared insights into FANSA's initiatives and its continuous efforts to support sanitation workers across different regions of Nepal.
Ms. Shanti Tamang, a dedicated sanitation worker and leader of the Women Sanitation Workers; Cooperative, participated in the dialogue and shared her personal experiences. She emphasized the importance of dignity and respect in the profession and called for a supportive and inclusive work environment for all sanitation workers.
During the panel discussion, Ms. Tamang addressed a pressing issue: the reluctance of workers to use personal protective equipment (PPE). She explained that PPE often hinders their efficiency, reducing their ability to manage waste within limited timeframes, which directly impacts their earnings. Additionally, she highlighted that the available PPE is not user-friendly and fails to accommodate workers of different body sizes, making it difficult to use effectively.
The dialogue served as a crucial platform to amplify the voices of sanitation workers, promote their dignity, and advocate for more inclusive and equitable working conditions in the sanitation sector.
