From Advocating to Securing Dignity”- A Journey of Bhumiya, Transwoman in Nepal
Bhumiya’s journey to becoming Hetauda City Nepal's first transwoman sanitation worker is a testament to her resilience and determination to overcome societal obstacles. Originally from Saptari district, and from the Muslim community, Bhumiya faced family rejection and financial hardship, initially having to rely on sex work for survival. However, her aspirations for a different future led her to Hetauda, where she encountered crucial support from transgender activists and mentors within the LGBTIQAI+ network and FANSA Nepal. These supporters not only helped her develop advocacy skills but also connected her with various training and exposure opportunities, empowering her to demand her rights and work toward her dreams. Her journey was far from easy, as she contended with financial challenges, societal stereotypes, and the struggle to remain true to herself in a world that often pressured her to conform. Through rigorous advocacy efforts, Bhumiya and her network members engaged with provincial and local governments, resulting in her appointment as Hetauda City’s first transgender sanitation worker. Reflecting on her journey, Bhumiya proudly shared, “We possess the strength of both men and women. Today, she stands as a powerful symbol of hope, paving the way toward a more inclusive future for others in her community.”
