The South Asian Conclave on WASH, held on September 9, 2024, was a vibrant gathering of diverse voices. LGBTIQA+ representatives, sanitation champions, community leaders, youth, government officials, and development partners all came together to tackle some of the most pressing WASH issues in the region.
Community leaders shared inspiring stories of their initiatives on water, sanitation, and hygiene, revealing the challenges they continue to face in the field. Youth leaders stepped up to highlight their interventions, importance of a collaborative environment where young people don’t just participate, but also given chance lead WASH programs.
Ms. Lajana Manandhar, addressed the keynote speech along with chaired session on Improving WASH Practices in Institutions. Building on this momentum, FANSA Secretariat launched the much-anticipated WASH Sector Policies and Sector Investment Synthesis report. Mr. Kabir Rajbhandari, FANSA Regional Coordinator, presented key findings, underscoring the need for South Asian countries to develop practical strategies to achieve SDG Goal 6. Meanwhile, in an exciting session chaired by Ms. Samira Shakya, Program Manager, participants dived into the topic "Turning Trash into Treasure." This discussion on decentralized solid waste management showcased innovative community-led initiatives, proving that managing waste can indeed be transformative at the community level.
The conclave wrapped up with a visit to the Sulabh International Social Service Organisation, founded in 1992 by social activist and Padma Vibhushan recipient Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak. This visit left everyone inspired, closing the event on a hopeful note for a safe and sustainable WASH in South Asia.
