Ensuring Safe Sanitation: Initiatives of Communities and CSOs in South Asia

On June 26, 2024, FANSA Regional Secretariat hosted a side event titled "Ensuring Safe Sanitation: Initiatives of Communities and CSOs in South Asia" amidst of the Global Summit on Sanitation. This impactful event was organized by the FANSA Regional Secretariat, in collaboration with the Gates Foundation and organizer -UNICEF and WHO.
The event highlighted community initiatives for safely managed sanitation services. Community leaders from FANSA Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka shared their grassroots efforts, amplifying the voices of unheard communities. The event had Mr. Roshan Raj Shrestha as a key note speaker, and FANSA Governance Council Chair Mr. Murali Ramisetty presented FANSA's milestone achievements in community engagement.
FANSA Pakistan and Maldives also showcased their initiatives in strengthening accountability and empowering communities. The event concluded with a powerful Call to Action by Ms. Bhawana Sharma from FANSA Nepal, urging governments, DFIs, development partners, and the private sector to recognize CSOs as crucial intermediaries for achieving development outcomes and bridging gaps between government initiatives and community needs.
With 55 participants, including development partners, government officials, UN agencies, and esteemed delegates, the side event was a testament to the power of community-driven sanitation solutions. Together, we can empower communities to demand their rights and create a safely managed sanitation for all.
